Joonas Suotamo, Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia Addams, Jenna Ortega, Isaac Ordonez, Thing and Luis … More
A new video from Netflix featuring Jenna Ortega and Tim Burton takes a sneak peek behind the scenes of Wednesday Season 2.
Released in 2022, Wednesday Season 1 went on to become No. 1 on Netflix’s list of the Top 10 most popular shows globally of all time. To date, the series has 252 million views, which equates to nearly 1.719 hours viewed.
In April, Netflix announced that Wednesday Season 2 would return with Part 1’s four episodes premiering on Aug. 6, with Part 2 and four more episodes debuting on Sept. 3. In a new behind-the-scenes production featurette released by the streaming service on Tuesday, several of the key people in front of and behind the camera shared some of their thoughts about the upcoming season.
“Wednesday is one of the coolest characters of all time, so to slip into the costume and tone again, it’s just so much fun,” Ortega said.
Ortega, of course, is reuniting with director and executive producer Burton for Wednesday Season 2. In between the seasons, Ortega joined Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara and Danny DeVito for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, directed by Burton and written by Wednesday creators Miles Millar and Alfred Gough.
“There really isn’t a lot of Addams family lore, so we wanted to delve deeper into the family,” Millar said in Netflix video, while Gough added, “The scope has expanded in terms of the character arcs and it’s really fun to see them explore a lot more of Nevermore.”
‘Wednesday’ Season 2 Expands Gomez And Morticia Addams’ Presence
While Luis Guzmán and Catherine Zeta-Jones were pivotal players in their recurring roles as Wednesday’s parents, Gomez and Morticia Addams, in Wednesday Season 1, both actors were promoted to series regulars for Wednesday Season 2.
“For me, it was enjoyable just because I love the cast,” Tim Burton said in the Netflix video. “This year we bring the family to Nevermore.”
That means more scenes for both Guzmán and Zeta-Jones — who gets to have a bit of mother-daughter time, albeit competitively, with Wednesday.
“It was like, ‘Oh my gosh, I get to fence?’” Zeta-Jones enthused in the video.
“I feel lucky to be experiencing this mother-daughter dynamic with someone like Catherine,” Jenna Ortega added.
Catherine is such an amazing actress,” Burton also noted. “She brings a reality to it.”
In addition to Zeta-Jones’ scenes with Ortega, Miles Millar and Alfred Gough said int eh featurette that viewers will get to experience Gomez and Pugsley’s (Isaac Ordonez) “father-son story evolve over the season.”
Staying at home with Gomez and Morticia in Season 1, Pugsley joins Wednesday at Nevermore for Season 2.
“Poor Pugsley. He’s an outcast among outcasts this season,” Burton said in the featurette. “Isaac did a really beautiful job of capturing the pathos of Pugsley.”
Guzmán and Ordonez are among the original cast members who are interviewed for the video, along with Joanna Lumley, who is new to the Wednesday cast for Season 2 as Grandmama.
“There’s always something thrilling about working for Tim Burton,” Lumley, who previously voiced a role in the director’s stop-motion animated classic Corpse Bride, said in the video. “The world they’ve created here, it looks sensational. This gothic [scenery is] sometimes quite bone-chilling, but it’s kind of playful.”
As for the story of Wednesday Season 2, Miles Millar said, “We were able to top the mystery of Season 1,” while Gough added, “The ambition of the show is limitless. We let our imaginations fly.”
Wednesday Season 2 premieres with Part 1, with four episodes on Aug. 6 and returns with Part 2 and four more episodes on Sept. 3.
