Within 20 days of the film’s release, Indian star Shah Rukh Khan’s latest outing Jawan has crossed $120 million at the global box office, making it the third Hindi film ever to do so. In 2023 alone, Khan’s two films have achieved the feat – Pathaan did it earlier this year, and now Jawan has also reached the milestone. Directed by Arlee (of Mersal, Raja Rani fame), Jawan has grossed $120.6 million worlwide. In the Indian markets, the original Hindi version of the film alone has made a nett collection of $60.5 million.
Jawan in week two
Last week, the film crossed the $100 million-mark worldwide in 13 days of the initial release on September 7. The film continued to rule ticket windows in the second weekend as well and crossed $89 million in the US markets alone.
Jawan made a total of $2.5 million in the second weekend in the US markets and ranked at the third slot on Comscore’s list of world’s top grossers over the weekend ending September 17. It also ranked in the top five highest-grosssing films worldwide for that weekend.
Jawan opening
In its first weekend of its release, Jawan toppled two Hollywood biggies in the home turf and pushed Barbie and Oppenheimer down on Comscore’s list that weekend. It was the fourth-highest-grossing film for the weekend ending September 10 in the US markets. It crossed $5 million in the US alone and also ranked at the second slot for worldwide collections over the weekend, second only to The Nun II.
Star power
Most of the credit for Jawan’s soaring box office success can be attributed to the fandom of the big Indian stars involved. The film features Tamil star Vijay Sethupathi (of Vikram Vedha, Master fame) who plays the role of the main villain. South Indian star Nayanthara also made her debut in Bollywood with the film that features her as a top cop in a special task force. Deepika Padukone (of XXX: The Return of Xander Cage fame) plays mom to one of Khan’s characters while she has been paired opposite his other character. Popular Hindi film actors Sunil Grover, Ridhi Dogra, and Sanya Malhotra also play major parts in the film, making it a product that all kinds of audience may seek. Sanjay Dutt (of Agneepath, Khalnayak fame) has a special cameo in an interesting part of the film.
Wide release
Jawan is arguably Khan’s widest release and benefits from it heavily. A total of 10,000 screens across the globe were dedicated for the film, including 6,000 screens in India. Khan also used a tactical trick and stayed clear of indulging fans too much. He limited his media interactions and even avoided too many promotional tours across India, perhaps enticing fans to become more eager to watch him on the big screen, producer and film business analyst Girish Johar says.
