Jannik Sinner, Iga Swiatek Tabbed As U.S. Open Betting Favorites

Wimbledon champions Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek have been tabbed as betting favorites for this year’s U.S. Open beginning Sunday, per betting site bookmaker.eu

Among the men, the 24-year-old No. 1 seed Sinner is a narrow favorite (+116) to defend his title over his top rival, No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz (+152), with 24-time major champion and No. 7 Novak Djokovic a distant third (+1325) and German No. 3 Alexander Zverev next (+1517).

Sinner and Alcaraz have combined to win the last seven Grand Slam titles and are now the virtual co-favorites to win an eighth straight.

Sinner said he’s “not 100% yet” for the start of the tournament but expects to be ready “in a couple of days.”

Sinner suffered from a virus at the Cincinnati Open that forced him to retire down 5-0 to Alcaraz n Monday’s final.

“I’m firstly very happy to be back here,” Sinner said Friday at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. “It’s a great tournament. It’s obviously the last Grand Slam we have for this season, so, you know, the motivations are very high.

“So physically I feel good. You know, I have recovered mostly, not 100% yet, but we are aiming to be there in couple of days. So should be all fine for the tournament.”

Among the women, No. 2 seed Iga Swiatek is a narrow favorite (+250) over world No. 1 and defending U.S. Open champion Aryna Sabalenka (+295), with American No. 3 seed Coco Gauff and Russian-born No. 9 Elena Rybakina tied as third favorites (+850), followed by 18-year-old Russian No. 5 Mirra Andreeva (+975).

Six-time major winner and 2022 U.S. Open champ Swiatek is red-hot after winning Wimbledon and then the Cincinnati Open last week on hardcourts. She and partner Casper Ruud also reached the finals of the reimagined U.S. Open Mixed Doubles event this week.

Sabalenka is the defending U.S. Open champion but has come up short in big spots in the majors this year, losing in the Australian Open final to American Madison Keys, the Roland Garros final to Gauff and the Wimbledon semis to Amanda Anisimova.

“Swiatek, for me, is the one to beat,” ESPN’s ‘Mary Joe Fernandez said this week on a conference call with reporters. “I wouldn’t have said that before Wimbledon. She really struggled in the latter stages of Majors, not reaching a final for a year, didn’t win any tournaments on the clay, which is where she’s dominated the last few seasons.

“For her to get her mojo back, get her game back. Her extreme grips, the way she moves I think has changed everything. Now having won in Cincinnati I think has given her another big boost. She’s a confident player at the moment.

“Sabalenka is No. 1. I think [the] No. 1 ranking will be on the line. She’s been consistent. She’s gotten to the end of these big tournaments, but the nerves have got in the way. I just feel the last few weeks, she’s struggling a bit. I feel like her backhand that’s usually a strength is letting her down a lot. We’ll see if mentally she puts it together. If she plays well, obviously look out. She can take the racquet out of anybody’s hand.

“You have a lot of great Americans. Maddie Keys, who won Australia, is one to look out for. These courts are pretty quick. If she gets her timing and is playing well, she’ll be very dangerous.”
