Jamie Lynn Spears Said She Tried To Help Britney Leave Her Conservatorship

Topline

Jamie Lynn Spears said she tried to help her older sister Britney Spears leave her 13-year-long conservatorship in a Wednesday interview on Good Morning America, her first since the pop star was freed from the controlling legal agreement in November.

Key Facts

While promoting her upcoming memoir Things I Should Have Said, Jamie Lynn said she was “happy” when Britney was freed from her conservatorship two months ago and she wasn’t aware of what the conservatorship entailed when it was first put in place because she was only 17-years-old and expecting her first child.

The Zoey 101 star said she “setup ways” to help her sister, to give her contacts to “end the conservatorship” and spoke to Britney’s previous legal team, which “didn’t end well in [her] favor,” though Britney has said her family didn’t do “a goddamn thing,” to help her.

Though Jamie Lynn was appointed to distribute Britney’s assets to her children if anything happened to her, Jamie Lynn said she “didn’t want to be involved until [Britney]

was out of her conservatorship.”

Crucial Quote

“I have only ever loved and supported her and done what’s right by her and she knows that, so I don’t know why we’re in this position right now,” Jamie Lynn said, referencing the rift between the sisters. Britney has said she wanted to sue her family and her father for the way they treated her.

Chief Critic

As promos of Jamie Lynn’s interview were shared online, Britney posted a photo of a typewriter on Instagram, captioning it: “Shall I start from THE BEGINNING???” The “Toxic” singer has hinted at doing her own bombshell interview, posting on Instagram in November that she is going to “set things square on Oprah.”

Tangent

Jamie Lynn said her family and her sister’s PR team were discouraged when she became pregnant as a teenager. After her daughter Maddie suffered a near-fatal ATV accident in 2017, Jamie Lynn said she became obsessive compulsive and struggled with her mental health.

Key Background

Britney was involuntarily entered into a conservatorship in 2008 that placed control of her medical decisions and her business and financial dealings into the hands of her father Jamie after she suffered a mental breakdown. The singer has said in court through her lawyer Matthew Rosengart and in her own testimony that Jamie’s purview extended far beyond this: She said she was forced to get an IUD to prevent her from getting pregnant, was forbidden from driving in the same car as her boyfriend and was only allotted a $2,000 weekly allowance for spending, despite having a net worth of $60 million. Britney said that Jamie Lynn and their mother Lynne Spears reaped benefits from her conservatorship, something the family has denied. Britney has said she wants to “sue her family” and has disparaged their actions since being freed in November. Jamie Lynn’s book originally had the working title I Must Confess, which quotes Britney’s hit song “Hit Me Baby One More Time,” though it was changed once fans complained. It was reported last week that Britney unfollowed Jamie Lynn on Instagram.
