The new collaboration “Lie to Me” not only sees James Reid and Destiny Rogers coming together to break musical and cultural borders but also change up the traditional narrative in love stories.
Bringing together the Filipino artist and California star, “Lie to Me” comes as the latest visual from Reid’s recently released Lovescene album. “I thought the song was good, but when Destiny hopped on, I was in love with it,” Reid shares of the track that marks another collab after teaming with the likes of South Korea’s Jay B, Japan’s ØZI, and Zack Tabudlo from the Philippines this year. Rogers adds, “The first time I heard ‘Lie to Me’ I instantly fell in love with the song. James had played it for me to see if I was interested in hoppin’ on it—of course I couldn’t deny it.”
While the sexy, synth-laced single can grab audiences from the first listen, the music video should also create a larger conversation by depicting a complicated love triangle with both Reid and Rogers falling for the same girl. The story is particularly meaningful for Destiny as it marks the first time the singer-songwriter filmed with a female love interest after first opening up about her bisexuality last month.
“The music video was shot in Manila,” Rogers shares. “It was my first time in Manila and first time filming with a girl love interest. The concept is a love triangle between me, James, and the girl—and I eventually end up stealing James’ girl. The music video definitely got me out of my comfort zone a little, but I had such a blast filming it—it was the most fun music video shoot I’ve ever done.”
Rogers adds that sharing more about herself has been crucial to her journey in self-acceptance, and she hopes her example, as well as her new music, can help others.”
“Over the years, I have struggled with self-love and figuring out who I am as a person,” she adds. “At 23-years-old, I finally figured it out and recently came out publicly as bi-sexual in front of the whole world. I am so blessed to be given the gift and platform to share my story and music with people all over the world that is struggling with the same thing. I have poured all of my emotions into my new music, and I can’t wait to be able to share it with everyone. This is only the beginning so stick along with me for the ride.”
Reid also admires his collaborator’s personal growth and considers her an important part of his burgeoning global music career. “I’m super proud of her for coming out and playing her first bi-sexual role in the music video,” he says. “It was everything I’d hoped for in a collaboration. Destiny is the first international artist I ever got to work with together in the studio and I was blown away. When she recorded her vocals I was like, ‘Damn, this song was meant to be with her.’ I’m just really grateful she was down to do it.”
Reid adds, “It’s been a crazy year coming out to LA for the first time getting a chance to work with so many world-class producers and artist. I’m really proud of this album and what it means as a Filipino artist trying to break boundaries. There’s not much representation for Filipinos globally outside of stereotypes so it’s exciting to see where this will all go. Lovescene is the fastest project I’ve ever made and I’m already working on another album and a North American tour. I’m excited to perform on tour again for the first time in four years.”
