Jack Black’s new song Video Games just dropped along with a brand new animated music video featuring an animated Black alongside his Tenacious D bandmate, Kyle Gass. The pair make their way through God Of War, Fallout 4, Red Dead Redemption and various other popular games. It may be the greatest and best song in the world.
“I don’t play video games no more,” the song opens, and then goes on to list all the exceptions to that statement. It’s your typical foul-mouthed Tenacious D song, and the video has a few NSFW moments (the magic mushroom in Super Mario Bros. is not one you’d find in the new Mario movie, which Black also stars in—and recently released two music videos for).
In any case, see for yourself:
Poor Kyle, he did not fare so well.
Some of the characters we see Black as include Link (pictured above) from The Legend Of Zelda, as well as:
Kratos from God Of War
Lara Croft from Tomb Raider
Ryu from Street Fighter
The Scout from Team Fortress 2
Naked Cowboy Guy from Red Dead Redemption II
. . . and many, many more.
What’s great about this video is just how genuinely happy Jack Black is to share his love for video games as a middle-aged man. Gaming is no longer only the wheelhouse of the young. Those of us who grew up in the 80s and 90s grew up with video games (and tabletop games) and play them still. I play more games in my 40s than I did in my 20s!
And Black is not some drive-by celebrity trying to make a quick buck on gamers, either. He’s the real deal and even has an entire YouTube channel dedicated to gaming.
In any case, if there’s one thing I think most everyone can agree on, it’s that Jack Black is a national treasure—one of the most genuine, nice, fun people out there; a guy who’s totally confident in who he is and what he likes. I can’t think of a better celebrity role model.
My only problem with this song is that it’s too damn short!
The music video was created by Oneyplays and Directed by Adam Paloian and Chris “Oney” O’Neill.
P.S. A lot of these games are really popular and well-known and I thought it was kind of cool that they included The Scout from Team Fortress 2 which, while a very well-known game, is a bit older and probably less recognizable for a lot of younger gamers. I used to play the hell out of that game back in the day when I was playing mostly Valve titles like Half-Life 2, Counter-Strike: Source etc.
