In South Korea, the Gaon charts and the Korea Music Content Association (KMCA) announce which songs and albums have performed well enough to earn coveted certifications once a month. In February 2022, nine different titles collect honors, making it one of the busiest months in recent memory. Included in the list of successful releases is Itzy’s Crazy In Love, and with a new prize to their name, the vocal outfit breaks out of a tie with several other beloved acts and moves up on an important all-time ranking.
Itzy’s Crazy In Love is now a double platinum-certified album in South Korea, meaning it has been purchased by half a million fans in the nation. That’s a huge win for the girl group, as prior to the announcement, they had only snagged one prize. Their previous effort, an EP titled Guess Who, is steady at platinum status (which kicks in at 250,000 sales), which it hit in June 2021. Now with two awards, the band ranks among the most successful all-female acts in South Korean history.
Amazingly, with just a pair of album certifications, Itzy already ranks as the girl group with the fourth-most such prizes of any kind. With their second honor, the beloved act breaks out of a tie with both Aespa and Red Velvet, who have already snagged one award. Brand new girl group Ive lands their first such win this month, so they weren’t ever actually tied with Itzy.
Fellow South Korean outfit Twice ranks as the girl group with the most album certifications in the country’s history, with nine. In fact, they’re ahead of all other acts, beating Seventeen and BTS by a single win. In second place among female vocal troupes is the now-defunct Iz*One, with five. Blackpink ranks as the K-pop girl group with the third-most such honors, with four.
In addition to Itzy, eight other South Korean acts score certifications this month. The list includes the aforementioned Ive, soloist Kai, collective SM Town and boy bands Ateez, BTS, NCT, Stray Kids and Treasure. Among the bunch, BTS collects the biggest award, as their Butter single album has now officially sold three million copies in the country alone.
