Is ‘The Mandalorian’ Cancelled? Season 4 Release Date, Plot And Everything You Need To Know

The Mandalorian wrapped up its third season yesterday—spoilers ahead!—with a really great season finale that tied the retake Mandalore plot up nicely and saw Din Djarin adopt his young ward, Grogu, in order to make him an official Mandalorian apprentice. In all honesty, it felt like a series finale more than just a season finale. So will there be any more of the flagship Disney+ Star Wars series?

First, let’s go over the Season 3 finale. Jump ahead to read about Season 4.

Read my Season 3 finale review right here.

A lot felt like it got resolved at the end of this season:

  • Despite Moff Gideon destroying the Darksaber, Bo-Katan was named the rightful ruler of Mandalore and she and her people reclaimed their home world once more.
  • Moff Gideon himself was consumed by flames, though it’s entirely possible he’s still alive. “Only mostly dead” applies to lots of characters in the Star Wars universe, after all.
  • Mando got his groove back, reminding us all what a total badass he really is after a season of disappointments.

But most importantly, Din Djarin and little Din Grogu moved on. Rather than setting up shop on Mandalore, Mando decided to get back to work. He had told Bo-Katan earlier in the season that her “song was not yet written” and pledged to follow her until it was. With Mandalore under her control, it seems that time came more quickly than expected.

So Mando goes back to work as a bounty hunter in the unofficial employ of the New Republic. He brings Greef Karga a revamped IG-11 droid to be Navarro’s new marshal for Navarro, and Karga gives him a new house. At the end of the episode (pictured above) Mando sits peacefully outside his little piece of heaven with Baby Yoda playing happily in the yard, force-flying a frog that’s also lunch, I reckon.

It feels like a series finale, and it very well could be. So what are the plans for Season 4 of The Mandalorian? Will there be one? Here’s everything we know.

The Mandalorian Season 4

As of this writing, Disney has not confirmed the existence of a new season of The Mandalorian. The show has not been renewed and Lucasfilm is not currently working on it. That, however, does not mean a new season isn’t possible.

In fact, all signs point to a future for Mando and Grogu’s fourth team-up coming sometime in the hopefully not-too-distant future.

We need look no further than the show’s creators, Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni, to get some evidence that other seasons are at least theoretically in the pipeline.

“Season 4, yeah I’ve written it already,” Favreau told BFM TV prior to the release of Season 3. “We have to know where we’re going to tell a fully formed story. We had mapped it out, Dave [Filoni] and I, and slowly you start to write each episode. I was writing it during post-production. All of it has to feel like a continuation and one full story.”

“[Dave’s] doing ‘Ahsoka,’ which I’m producing with him. He’s the writer and showrunner on that. To understand what’s happening on other shows….‘Skeleton Crew’ all take place within the same ‘Star Wars’ time period. There’s a lot more things that we’ve got to keep in mind and also stuff that we’ve built up to from previous seasons of ‘The Mandalorian’ as well.”

More recently, Favreau said, “I don’t know what would make me not enjoy doing it, especially as long as the audience is connecting with these characters. This feels like a really enjoyable moment. And I love this format of telling one chapter at a time and keeping the audience guessing, but also fulfilling certain expectations.”

With Season 4 already written and enthusiastic buy-in from its creators and producers, the only potential hang-ups would be if ratings were not up to par for Disney or if stars like Pedro Pascal were eager to move on.

As for the next season’s plot, I would predict two things: First, given the nature of the ‘reset’ the Season 3 finale provided, expect more serialized ‘bounty of the week’ style episodes once again. But don’t think that means there won’t be a larger plot that ties into the themes already established in the show: A resurgent Empire making life hard for the fledgling New Republic.

“On a base level, I would just say the coming conflict, the growing idea that the empire wasn’t as defeated as a lot of people want to believe and that the remnant is out there,” Dave Filoni told Variety. “We saw that from the very beginning with The Mandalorian and how Gideon was plotting, there are always people that are willing to undermine something that the Republic is trying to build and put back on its feet.

What’s Next In Star Wars?

As far as what comes next, it definitely isn’t The Mandalorian Season 4 which likely won’t be back until 2025 at the earliest. Instead, we have the new Ahsoka show coming up in August (it looks terrific) and the release of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor later this month. I’ll be reviewing both of these, as well as Skeleton Crew, which is coming out later this year and is set in the same timeline.

Then, in 2024 we have Andor Season 2, which I’m dreadfully excited about given how wonderful the first season was. After that, there are several movies in the pipeline including one from Filoni that ties together events in The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, Skeleton Crew and so forth. Lots to look forward to. Hopefully they don’t screw it up!
