Ikea Recalls Swivel Chair After Reports Of Injuries

Ikea has issued a voluntary recall of its Odger swivel chairs after receiving at least four reports of the chairs breaking, and two reports of people being injured, according to a notice on the company’s website.

The recall only impacts the Odger swivel chairs sold in dark gray, a color the company calls anthracite. All dark gray Odger chairs with a date stamp before and including 2221 should be returned to the company for a refund.

“The recalled swivel chair was sold in the US stores and online between October 2019 and December 2022 for about $159. Please immediately stop use and return it to any IKEA store for a full refund or if you are unable to return to a store, please contact us for instructions on how to dispose of the chair to receive a full refund,” Ikea said in a notice published to its website.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission published photos on its website showing how to find the date stamp on the chair. The date stamp is in a YEAR/WEEK format, meaning that a stamp of 2221 indicates it was produced in the year 2022 and the 21st week of the year.

The date stamp is located under the chair and has little arrows pointing to the year and the week the chair was produced. The underside of the chair also includes other information like, the names of the chair designers.

“Ikea has received four reports of the leg base of the ODGER Swivel Chair in anthracite breaking, including two reports of consumers being injured as a result of a fall, in the U.S. ,” the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said in a statement.

Proof of purchase, including a receipt, is not required to return the chair in stores. The chairs were manufactured in Italy and imported by Ikea Supply AG, of Switzerland.
