Former Attorney General Bill Barr said the federal indictment of former President Donald Trump poses a very significant threat to Trump’s future. “If even half of it is true, he is toast,” Barr said. “I mean, it’s a very detailed indictment, and it’s very, very damning.”
In an interview on Fox News Sunday, Barr dismissed the idea—advanced by Trump and his supporters—that the 38-count federal indictment is a political attack intended to damage his 2024 presidential campaign. “This idea of presenting Trump as a victim here—a victim of a witch hunt—is ridiculous,” Barr told host Shannon Bream.
“We can’t forget here that this entire thing came about because of reckless conduct of the president,” Barr said. “If he had just turned over the documents, which I think every other person in the country would have done…they’re the government’s documents, they’re official records, they’re not his personal records.”
“Battle plans for an attack on another country,” Barr said, “are in no universe Donald J. Trump’s personal documents.”
In a speech in Columbus, Georgia Saturday, Trump railed against the indictment, describing the Justice Department as “a sick nest of people that needs to be cleaned out immediately.” He said the special counsel, Jack Smith, was “deranged” and “openly a Trump hater.”
“The baseless indictment of me by the Biden administration’s weaponized Department of Injustice will go down as among the most horrific abuses of power in the history of our country,” Trump told a crowd at the Georgia Republican Party’s state convention.
