Presidential historiam Doris Kearns Goodwin says she believes the country is ready to turn the page on Donald Trump. “I really think it’s time for him to go,” she said Friday morning on MSNBC’s Morning Joe. “People are beginning to feel that.”
“People who were not speaking out before are beginning to,” Kearns Goodwin said. “His opponents are going to have to say something. But more importantly, the people are going to have to say, do we really, really want to go through this again? And I don’t think they’re going to say yes. I really, really don’t.”
Kearns Goodwin described Trump’s current message as one of “retribution” against his perceived enemies, a message she believes will ultimately fail when voters go to the polls next fall. She quoted Abraham Lincoln, who said “if you allow yourself to fester with poisonous emotions” like anger, or vindictiveness, or trying to get back at people, you’ll poison yourself. And that’s what will happen to this country unless those moments of vindictiveness are squashed.”
In March, Trump told supporters his 2024 presidential campaign—and his presidency, should he be elected—would be about “retribution.” In a speech in National Harbor, Maryland, Trump said “in 2016, I declared, ‘I am your voice.’ Today, I add: I am your warrior. I am your justice. And for those who have been wronged and betrayed, I am your retribution.”
After Trump surrendered to federal authorities in Miami this week on 37 charges of mishandling government documents, the former president vowed to get revenge on President Biden, who he accused of leading a political persecution of his rival for the White House. “I will appoint a real special prosecutor to go after the most corrupt president in the history of America, Joe Biden,” Trump said, “and go after the Biden crime family.”
