US President Donald Trump delivers a speech marking his 100th day in office at Macomb County … More
On a day when most of the cable and broadcast news media focused on what Donald Trump has done in his first 100 days in office–and Trump himself celebrated his record at a rally–MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow looked forward Tuesday night, predicting that Trump and his team would “try to change the political trajectory” that they’re on–one Maddow described as increasingly anti-Trump. “I think, 100 days in, that Donald Trump is losing,” Maddow said. “And I think Americans defending democracy are winning.”
Maddow said that Trump’s moves to deport U.S. citizens and arrest judges were “insane” and “we should expect some wild pitches, some truly reckless actions” to shift the narrative as Trump endures collapsing approval ratings and public protests across the country. “We should expect that there are going to be some things ahead that are markedly more horrible than even what they have done already.”
“I think they’re going to put some proverbial heads on pikes,” Maddow said on MSNBC’s The Rachel Maddow Show. “And I think that’s going to be terrible.”
But Maddow said “the more important truth here is that the country is against them, and the country is against him–and he knows it. And the country is not only willing to get out and protest against him, they are willing to do it over, and over, and over, and over, and over and over again in every state in the country and just about every town.”

Trump’s moves–including heightened attacks on the news media, repeated references to somehow attempting to run again in 2028, and sticking with people like Pete Hegseth, whose tenure as Defense Secretary has been rocked by–as one former Pentagon spokesperson put it, “a month of total chaos”–have sparked a growing protest movement, which Maddow predicts will only gain momentum.
“Culturally, it is now firmly established that capitulation and sucking up to Trump is shameful and weak and marks you as a loser,” Maddow told viewers. “Conversely, I think it is culturally ingrained now that saying no to Trump, and fighting him, and standing up to him, shows that you are strong and a winner and somebody who other people might be interested in.”
“Bottom line, I think as long as the movement against him stays nonviolent,” Maddow said, “the movement against him wins.”
Fox News Senior White House Correspondent Peter Doocy believes the president is well aware of public opinion turning against him, and intends to do everything he can to fix that. “I get a sense that he thinks the immigration policy and the changes that they’ve put in place is a big hit with people,” Doocy told me. “And that the tariff policy can be a big hit. It just hasn’t happened the way that they want it yet.”
“And we know that Trump is hyper-focused on approval polls. They know that at the moment, the economic policy is not as as popular, but I have a sense that they will do whatever they have to do to make sure that his base is taken care of, which are people that don’t necessarily have a lot of money tied up in the stock market.”
