Hurricane Ian made landfall in South Carolina on Friday, bringing massive rain and flooding to the state’s Atlantic coast, only days after the storm caused destruction across much of Florida.
Key Facts
Ian touched down at around 2 p.m. in Georgetown, South Carolina—a small coastal town between Charleston and Myrtle Beach—as a Category 1 storm, with maximum sustained wind speeds of around 85 mph.
It was the storm’s second U.S. landfall: Ian previously hit the Gulf Coast as a Category 4 storm on Wednesday and plowed across Florida to the Atlantic, killing at least 21 Floridians and causing extensive damage.
Over 200,00 people in South Carolina were without power on Friday as the storm moved north, along with 129,000 in North Carolina and 13,000 people in Virginia, according to PowerOutage.us.
The hurricane is delivering hazardous storm surges to coastal South Carolina, and heavy rain is forecasted for North and South Carolina and parts of Virginia as the storm moves inland and weakens over the next day.
