Hurricane Ian Causes Catastrophic Flooding In Florida

Topline

Hurricane Ian made landfall in Florida on Wednesday afternoon, causing mass flooding, power outages and catastrophic damage throughout the state, as Floridians and storm watchers took to social media to share videos and images of their conditions in real time.

Key Facts

Over 1.5 million people were without power in the state as the storm made its way across the Florida peninsula, likely bringing a “life-threatening storm surge” with it, the National Hurricane Center said.

A massive surge, between eight and 20 feet, flooded the city of Fort Meyers Beach, putting some of almost entirely underwater.

Video taken by the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Department showed trees toppled and structures torn apart, caused by the storm’s outer bands.

Harsh winds ripped through Sarasota, Florida.
