Mason Mount has Chelsea in his blood. While the 24-year-old is a self-confessed Portsmouth fan, he came through the youth system at Stamford Bridge. In many ways, Mount embodies how Chelsea have established a pathway between their world-class academy and the first team in recent years.
Yet Mount’s future at Stamford Bridge is far from certain. The midfielder will enter the final year of his contract at Chelsea this summer and talks between Mount and the club are believed to have recently stalled. There is a growing sense he could be on his way out of Stamford Bridge sooner rather than later.
Liverpool are reportedly monitoring the situation with the Reds keen to strengthen their midfield in the summer transfer window. Mount could be available for a knock-down price if Chelsea are forced into selling one of their prize assets before he reaches the end of his contract in the summer of 2024.
There’s good reason to believe Mount would be successful at Liverpool. Jurgen Klopp’s team have lacked creativity in the centre of the pitch this season and the England international would certainly bring this to Anfield. Mount would give Liverpool some much-needed invention behind their frontline.
Klopp would surely appreciate Mount’s versatility too. The 24-year-old is capable of playing in a deeper position in midfield, but also in behind a central striker as something of a number 10. He can play on either side of a central trio and even on the wing if needs be. This would be useful for a Liverpool team that plays with fluidity.
Out of possession, Mount is also an energetic force and would help to rejuvenate a Liverpool midfield unit that has looked old at various points this season. It’s true Mount would need a support system around him, but the likes of Stefan. Bajcetic and Fabinho could offer this to prevent the Englishman from being left exposed higher up the pitch.
This season has made clear the need for a rebuild at Anfield. Liverpool will do well to finish in the Premier
Jude Bellingham has been mentioned as a potential target with the teenage midfielder also wanted by several clubs around Europe. It could be the case that Bellingham offers Liverpool enough they don’t need someone like Mount, but the Reds need a contingency plan for if they miss out on their top target. They could do a lot worse than adding Mount to their squad this summer.
