How New Media Is Changing The Way We Do Business

The content industry has notably made great strides and developments across societal matrix’s and otherwise. One area that has become a statement area for change through programming has been real estate.

Being able to create videos for low-to-no cost is nothing new, and something YouTube has created a world-leading market around. The advertising element however is rather unique as it pertains to an industry such as real estate.

Agents have famously used buses, billboards, TV commercials, cold-calling, postcards digital ads, SEO, and everything in-between to varying levels of success. With a rule of thumb to invest a certain amount of profits back into marketing, and TV commercials being reserved for only the best and most successful agents as the buy-in is higher, or risk being aired at 3 am on a Wednesday.

The Reel Agents made up of Levi Lascsak and Travis Plumb, endeavored to use YouTube as a medium to promote their freshman real estate business. In their first year they generated $1 million in commissions but with zero advertising spend.

“Well, 87% of agents fail within the first two years in real estate,” said Lascsak. “When we were meeting with some of the top influencers in the industry they’re saying over and over again that they’ve never heard of this story.”

He continued, “They had never heard of agents just going from zero, especially coming from different industries. I came from a financial services background. Travis had a marketing agency, but he had never applied YouTube the way we did, he was doing paid search and paid ads and things like that.”

Now the pair teach agents how to leverage new age media in the same way. To ultimately make a six to seven-figure profit business with no ad-spend out of YouTube.

“We now also offer editing services on top of that because with YouTube comes editing and optimization and SEO and all that good stuff,” said Plumb. “So now we have an agency for people that also want to take advantage of the opportunity.”

The concept of using new types of media to create external revenue away from the medium is something that has been growing dramatically over the past five years.

Podcasts are being used to great effect by people across the entertainment sector, not only to create programming but to ultimately exploit unique narratives across TV, film, and other content. Social media has turned into a full-blown industry across the board for both marketing and money generation, and streaming platforms are recognizing that they have more cultural influence over fashion, music, and movements – the zeitgeist – than they ever would have imagined. Take Kate Bush’s resurgence through Stranger Things for example.

The change in processes has led to more opportunities for a wider group of people. With low buy-ins, and creativity being paramount, audiences and business people will continue to see opportunities increase in several areas of media.
