Glorious soccer events like the 2022 FIFA World Cup cause a great deal of anxiety in club teams, who legitimately fear that the tournament’s strong competition and thick schedule might cause some of their most valuable players to get injured.
However, since 2010, club teams have been able to find some comfort in the FIFA Club Benefits Programme, a pool of money that FIFA sets aside to reward those club teams whose players are participating in the world’s most celebrated soccer contest.
As 65 Serie A footballers are currently competing in Qatar, here’s how much the top-rated Italian teams can expect to receive for having their players in action at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
For the 2022 World Cup, FIFA explains it has allocated a total of $209 million to be shared with 416 club teams, replicating the figure that was distributed during the 2018 edition in Russia.
The program grants approximately $10,000 per player for each day that he spends with his national team, including the pre-World Cup training period. Accordingly, the minimum amount guaranteed per footballer by the FIFA Club Benefits Programme adds up to $180,000.
The reward keeps increasing in size as a player progresses through the 2022 FIFA World Cup knockout stages: $220,000 for reaching the Round of 16, $280,000 for the quarter-finals and $320,000 for the semi-finals.
Making it to the highly-coveted December 18 final at Qatar’s Lusail Iconic Stadium will generate $370,000.
These rewards apply to all players on a national team’s roster, regardless of their playing time throughout the competition. What’s more, FIFA will compensate all clubs in which the player has featured in the two years prior to the tournament kick-off.
Seventeen out of 20 Serie A clubs are represented at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, with only Empoli and newly-promoted Lecce and Monza not having sent any of their players.
The most-represented sides are Juventus, AC Milan and Inter Milan. The Bianconeri, who are by far the Italian club with the highest number of national team call-ups (11), can expect to receive at least $2 million from FIFA.
Seven AC Milan players are taking part in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, generating a $1.3 million minimum reward for the Rossoneri. Inter Milan are third in this ranking with six players, which translates into $1.1 million.
For Juventus, AC Milan and Inter Milan, these amounts are likely to grow considering that most of their players compete for some of the tournament’s favorites like Argentina, Belgium, Brazil and France.
Next on this list of Serie A clubs are Napoli and Torino, who will be pocketing $900,000 for having five players report for international duty in Qatar.
AS Roma, Atalanta, Fiorentina and Hellas Verona have four national team call-ups each and can expect to receive no less than $720,000 in compensation by the FIFA Club Benefits Programme.
