Topline

Police in Las Vegas arrested a man Tuesday following an hours-long standoff inside a hotel room at Caesars Palace on the Las Vegas Strip, where he reportedly held a woman hostage and threw what appeared to be a nightstand out of the high-rise window in a bizarre scene that captured social media attention.

Key Facts

SWAT officers entered the hotel room just before 3 p.m. local time, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department announced on Twitter.

Police took the male subject into custody, and took in the woman who police said was “safe and with officers.”

An investigation is underway into the standoff.

Key Background

Las Vegas police officers responded to Caesars Palace just after 9 a.m. local time, police Captain Stephen Connell said in a press briefing Tuesday afternoon. Connell said the incident started as a “disturbance between a male and female” that resulted in the man pulling the woman into a high-rise hotel room “by force.” Video footage later showed furniture thrown out of the window, including what appeared to be a nightstand and a chair, according to a hotel guest speaking to Las Vegas’ CBS affiliate.

What We Don’t Know

Whether the suspect was carrying a gun. Early reports indicated hotel guests heard the sound of gunfire, though Connell said no shots had been fired as of noon local time. Unpermitted open carry is legal in Nevada for adults 18 and older.
