Here’s how the Bill Gates Foundation invests over $40 billion in stocks

Holding approximately $69 billion as a financial endowment, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) is a private foundation based in the United States, founded by Microsoft’s co-founder, Bill Gates, and his ex-wife, Melinda French Gates.

As of 2018, Bill and Melinda Gates had donated around $36 billion to the foundation, according to its FAQ section.

Notably, the BMGF has over $42 billion invested in the stock market, according to the pseudonymous account Dividendology (@dividendology, 22,200 followers) on X (formerly Twitter). Of which, 90.55% is invested in the following six companies, with their respective allocation:

  • Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ: MSFT): 31.79% out of the $42 billion ($13.37 billion)
  • Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (NYSE: BRK.B): 20.38% out of the $42 billion ($8.57 billion)
  • Canadian National Railway Company (NYSE: CNI): 15.78% out of the $42 billion ($6.64 billion)
  • Waste Management Inc. (NYSE: WM): 14.53% out of the $42 billion ($6.11 billion)
  • Caterpillar Inc. (NYSE: CAT): 4.30% out of the $42 billion ($1.81 billion)
  • Deere & Company (NYSE: DE): 3.77% out of the $42 billion ($1.59 billion)

Additionally, the remaining 9.45% holdings are distributed among 17 other stocks, for a total of 23 companies. Of which Ecolab Inc (NYSE: ECL), The Coca-Cola Company (NYSE: KOF), and Walmart (NYSE: WMT) have more than 1% of Bill Gates’ allocations.

Meanwhile, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s largest holdings of 39.26 million shares on Microsoft has seen an increase of 1.92% of its value in the last week, trading at $321.8 per share at the time of publication.

However, Microsoft Corp stock registered both a losing month in the last 30 days, and a losing quarter, in the last three months, with 2.18% and 5.12% accumulated losses in each time frame, respectively.
