You may have already heard (probably from me) that Stranger Things is in a league of its own on Netflix
So which records has the show broken since Season 4 was unleashed back in May? And which ones is it still chasing? In this article, I’d like to run through everything. This way, we can highlight just how dominant the run has been and how much more impressive it could become.
The records ‘Stranger Things’ has broken
Most consecutive days on the Top 10
This is the most exciting record because…Stranger Things hasn’t finished breaking it. Back on August 9, 2022, the series completed its 79th consecutive day on the Top 10 charts. That beat The Queen’s Gambit’s previous record of 78 days, placing Stranger Things in a league of its own.
But that streak has continued since then, and who knows when it’s going to stop. Today, that streak stands at 95 days. If we don’t include the children’s program CoComelon as a contender (that show spent 255 consecutive days on the charts), then that makes Stranger Things the most consistently popular program on Netflix since the premiere of the Top 10 list in February 2020—and it’s not even close.
Here are the ten best streaks in Netflix history:
- Stranger Things – 95 days
- The Queen’s Gambit – 78 days
- Squid Game – 75 days
- Inventing Anna – 65 days
- Manifest – 64 days
- Bridgerton – 61 days
- Avatar: The Last Airbender – 61 days
- Ginny & Georgia – 58 days
- Ozark – 57 days
- iCarly – 53 days
Most first-place finishes
This record has actually consistently been broken over the years. Tiger King held the record for the first several months of the Top 10’s existence after spending 27 consecutive days in first place. But as time has passed, Netflix’s most popular shows have had multiple seasons and have taken over this record.
First it was Ginny & Georgia (for the record, that show did it with just one season). Then it was Manifest. Then Outer Banks, then Cobra Kai, then Virgin River. But everything changed once Stranger Things came along and completely obliterated the record by spending 42 total days in first place (including a 26-day streak).
Here are the most first-place finishes we’ve seen on Netflix (and keep in mind: Stranger Things did this with just one season):
- Stranger Things – 42 days
- Virgin River – 35 days
- Outer Banks – 32 days
- Tiger King – 31 days
- Manifest – 31 days
- Ginny & Georgia – 29 days
- Cobra Kai – 27 days
- Squid Game – 25 days
- The Umbrella Academy – 23 days
- The Queen’s Gambit – 23 days
Most viewing hours for an english-language program
While we’re on the topic of “records that Stranger Things has absolutely demolished,” let’s not forget the show’s viewing hour totals. This week the fourth season remained strong in third place with 28.8 million hours watched, which brought the season’s grand total to 1.794 billion hours.
That’s a record…by over one billion hours. Absolutely insane. Here are the ten biggest totals to date:
- Stranger Things: Season 4 – 1.794 billion hours
- Bridgerton: Season 2 – 775.24 million hours
- Maid: Season 1 – 655.51 million hours
- Inventing Anna: Season 1 – 654.38 million hours
- Ozark: Season 4 – 581.93 million hours
- You: Season 3 – 534.24 million hours
- The Witcher: Season 2 – 519.49 million hours
- Sex Education: Season 3 – 447.75 million hours
- Manifest: Season 1 – 432.29 million hours
- Stranger Things: Season 1 – 372.45 hours
One crazy note here: the first, second, and third seasons of Stranger Things hold the tenth-, eleventh-, and twelfth-place positions.
Also keep in mind that a show’s viewing hour total isn’t reported if it doesn’t rank in the top ten of any given week.
The records ‘Stranger Things’ is chasing
Most days on the Top 10
This record is a bit of a stretch, because several shows on Netflix have had multiple seasons to build their totals. For instance, Virgin River has had three seasons to accrue its 113 appearances on the Top 10—while Stranger Things has done it all with one season.
Currently, Stranger Things’s total stands at 95 days. If we discount CoComelon (whose total stands at 623 days), that puts Stranger Things in seventh place. As strong as the fourth season’s run has been, it seems unlikely that Stranger Things would be able to capture the record this year (although we’ll see). Which means the show could claim the record upon further seasons.
Here are the most Top 10 appearances by shows on Netflix:
- The Office – 188 days
- Ozark – 159 days
- All American – 134 days
- Bridgerton – 126 days
- Virgin River – 113 days
- Manifest – 101 days
- Stranger Things – 95 days
- Outer Banks – 93 days
- Cobra Kai – 93 days
- Love is Blind – 90 days
Most consecutive days in first place
Stranger Things just narrowly missed out on this record thanks to The Umbrella Academy’s third season. If it weren’t for that show, Stranger Things could have very well capture 40+ consecutive days in first place—which would have easily been the record. So if Stranger Things is to break this record, it’ll have to be with another season.
Here are the ten longest first-place runs in Netflix history (you’ll see that Stranger Things made the list twice):
- Ginny & Georgia – 29 days
- Manifest – 27 days
- Tiger King – 27 days
- Stranger Things – 26 days
- Squid Game – 25 days
- Outer Banks – 23 days
- The Queen’s Gambit – 22 days
- You – 21 days
- Stranger Things – 15 days
- Clickbait – 15 days
- Ratched – 15 days
- The Umbrella Academy – 15 days
Most viewing hours for a show of any language
As you saw, Stranger Things easily has the most viewing hours of any english-language program on Netflix. But there’s one non-english-language program that has it beat: Squid Game.
Perhaps that’s no surprise, as Squid Game took the world by storm last year—and was perhaps more popular overseas than it was here. That show’s single-season total stands at 2.29 billion hours—that’s 495.91 million more hours that Stranger Things has accrued so far.
Now there is one slight caveat with this matchup: the non-english charts are much less competitive. Squid Game was able to build its total over the course of 20 weeks, while Stranger Things’s 1.794 billion hours have come in 13 weeks.
But when we narrow down Squid Game’s total to just the first 13 weeks, it still comes out ahead at 2.196 billion hours.
That doesn’t mean the record is out of reach, however, as Stranger Things has remained stronger in the back half of its run than Squid Game did. During the first six weeks, Squid Game amassed 1.903 billion hours to Stranger Things’s 1.261 billion hours. But in weeks 7-13, Squid Game only managed 293.4 million hours to Stranger Things’s 532.1 million hours.
