In search of more outside shooting, the Knicks signed ex-Kansas standout Svi Mykhailiuk to a partially guaranteed one-year deal, according to The Athletic.
The 6-foot-8 25-year-old is a native of Ukraine who played 56 games with the Toronto Raptors last season averaging 4.6 points while shooting 39 percent from the field and 31 percent from deep. He is a career 35 percent shooter from deep.
“Shoot, he’s going to be good for them,” Kansas assistant and ex-St. John’s head coach Norm Roberts said by phone.
“He can shoot the [heck] out of the ball, he’s more athletic than you think.”
The No. 47 overall pick in 2018 by the Lakers, he has also played for the Thunder and Pistons.
“He’s got deep, deep range and he’s got a very, very quick release,” Roberts said. “He can do more than just shoot because he can do some things off the bounce playing off his shot-fake. I think he’s a really, really good player. That’s a great pickup for them because if they need shooting, he can definitely supply that.”
He helped Ukraine reached the round of 16 in Eurobasket in Berlin this month, scoring 25 points in a win over Italy, 18 in a win over Estonia and 17 in a victory against Great Britain.
After Russia invaded Ukraine earlier this year, he and fellow NBA player Alex Len released a statement.
“A great tragedy befell our dear homeland of Ukraine. We categorically condemn the war,” Mykhailiuk and Len said in the statement. “Ukraine is a peaceful, sovereign state inhabited by people who want to control their own destiny.
“We pray for their families, friends, and relatives and all the people who are in the territory of Ukraine. We hope for an end to this terrible war as soon as possible. Dear fellow Ukrainians, hold on! Our strength is in unity! We are with you!”
