After a three-year wait, the zany, absurdist dark comedy Los Espookys, featuring a predominantly Latino cast, returns for season 2 on HBO and HBO Max.
The critically acclaimed half-hour bilingual series, created and starred by Fred Armisen (Saturday Night Live, Portlandia), Ana Fábrega and Julio Torres, about a group of wacky friends who turn their love of horror into an eerie business venture by creating unique otherworldly experiences to spook clients, makes its comeback after a lengthy pandemic delay.
The original cast is back with a slew of special guests. Just like in the first season, the second round will be just six episodes.
The new season finds Los Espookys leader gore enthusiast Renaldo (Bernardo Velasco) haunted by the ghost of a murdered beauty pageant queen. And his Uncle Tico (Armisen) is quick to give him advice on how to handle that, in a teaser trailer dropped by HBO ahead of the show’s season 2 debut:
“Renaldo, you have to go to the cemetery. Dig up the coffin. Look at the corpse.”
The rest of the gang is dealing with their own issues. Úrsula (Cassandra Ciangherotti) enlists an old acquaintance to challenge the political status quo, while her well-meaning sister, Tati (Fábrega), is adjusting to life as a newlywed and struggling to balance a new gig.
Renaldo’s ominous best friend Andrés (Torres) is trying to find his place in the world after literally appeasing his inner demons. And Uncle Tico is searching for a new purpose after his dream career as a valet is derailed.
Returning cast members include recurring stars José Pablo Minor as Juan Carlos, River L. Ramirez as Sonia, Giannina Fruttero as Beatriz, Carmen Gloria Bresky as Mayor Teresa Lobos and Eudora Peterson as Krissy. New recurring cast members include Martine Gutierrez as Karina and guest stars Greta Titelman as Ambassador Melanie Gibbons, Spike Einbinder as Sombra Del Agua (Water’s Shadow), and Sam Taggart as JJ.
Isabella Rosellini, German singer-songwriter Kim Petras and Oscar-nominated Roma actress Yalitza Aparicio will also guest star.
Season 1 of the original series has a 100% certified fresh and 80% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. It remains to be seen if the new episodes will live up to critics and viewers’ expectations.
Fábrega and Sebastian Silva directed the new season’s episodes. Lorne Michaels, Armisen, Fábrega and Torres again executive produce along with Broadway Video’s Andrew Singer and Alice Mathias. It is co-executive produced by Nate Young, produced by Sharon Lopez and Andy Garland. Produced by Broadway Video, Antigravico and Oscar-winning Chilean production company Fabula.
Los Espookys debuts Friday, September 16 at 11 p.m. ET/PT.
