Harry And Meghan In ‘Near Catastrophic’ Car Chase With Paparazzi

Topline

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were involved in a “near catastrophic” two-hour long car chase Tuesday night after leaving an event in New York City, their spokesperson said Wednesday, according to news outlets.

Key Facts

The chase resulted in multiple near collisions with drivers on the road, pedestrian and two New York Police Department officers, the spokesperson said.

There was no car accident, an unnamed law enforcement source told CNN, but the couple’s NYPD protective team had to use evasive measures to get away from paparazzi who were chasing them on scooters, bikes, motorcycles and in cars.

Meghan’s mom, Doria Ragland, was traveling with the couple.

The couple was attending the Ms. Foundation Women of Vision Awards, where Meghan was receiving an award, their first public outing since he attended King Charles’ coronation earlier this month.

Key Background

Tuesday’s chase comes nearly 26 years after Harry’s mom, Princess Diana, died in a car crash in Paris after a group of photographers chased after her limousine. While the driver, who also died in the crash, was under the influence of drugs and alcohol at the time, Harry has repeatedly said his mother was killed because the paparazzi chased her. In a 2017 BBC interview Harry said the photographers not only caused the accident but didn’t try to save her while she was still alive. “She’d quite a severe head injury but she was very much still alive in the back seat and those people that caused the accident, instead of helping they were taking photographs in the back seat and then those photographs made their way back to news desks,” he said.
