Hallmark Mahogany, the greeting card brand that has honored and celebrated Black culture for more than 30 years, has now expanded into new content, including its first feature film entitled Unspeakably Good Things.
The narrative of the film centers on three best friends who reunite in Tuscany as they make important decisions about life and love. Starring Karen Pittman, Erica Ash, Joyful Drake, Luca Seta and Lance Gross, the movie was written by Cas Sigers Beedles and is executive produced by Korin D. Williams, and Monique Nash. Terri J. Vaughn directed the piece.
Bringing the Mahogany brand to the screen, ‘means everything,’ says Williams. “We’re just so excited that we’re able to tell stories that are meaningful for an audience that is looking for stories that represent them. “
Nash expands on the thought, adding, “All of us [feel] our mission in this business to tell these stories from an authentic lens and to show [the] many different facets of what it means to be a Black woman.”
Announced in 2021, the Mahogany programing initiative is scheduled to include a quarterly slate of original movies with plans for podcasts, scripted series, and more in the future. Toni Judkins, SVP Programming, Mahogany, is spearheading the initiative with the flagship brand’s team at Hallmark.
Judkins says that given the opportunity to create this film within the foundation of the brand is, ‘not only an honor but a serious responsibility.”
Ash explains her thoughts about this by saying, “For something this big and this weighted and just so necessary and having taken such a long time to implement, the people who are chosen to start it, I mean that’s huge. What an honor to say that, ‘we trust you with this baby that we’ve been gestating for decades, and you’re the ones to kick it off.’ I was really humbled by that.
It was important to stay true to the brand, says Vaughn, but, at the same time introduce something new that represents the African-American community, and, “how we move and how we flow and how we talk, how we laugh.”
Judkins believes that the film represents the essential elements of the Mahogany brand by staying rooted in the pillars of the brand, which she points out are, “Sisterhood, friendship, connection, and community.”
With Unspeakably Good Things, Nash feels that the creative group behind the film realizes that this type of narrative is, “something that has been all too rare and we’re just so grateful to have now an avenue where this is the norm. Really creating a new normal and blazing a path forward.”
At its core, Ash says that, “it’s important to show that girlfriends are necessary throughout every stage of life,” while Williams hopes that, “everyone can see this movie and see themselves represented in it. It’s for the masses as well, because it’s about friendship at the end of the day.”
‘Unthinkably Good Things’ airs August 28th at 9/8c across all Hallmark Networks.
