Topline
The Golden Globes will take place on Sunday, but will be missing its traditional red carpet and celebrity audience this year, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association said Tuesday, as the award show looks to make a comeback following a diversity scandal surrounding the HFPA last year.
Key Facts
The HFPA told Forbes the Golden Globes will not have a red carpet or audience due to the “current pandemic surge” and only “select members (of the HFPA) and grantees” will attend in-person.
No celebrities have signed on to participate in the show, Variety reported, citing sources and an email from a Globes talent booker sent out to celebrity agencies.
Representatives from organizations that are supported by the HFPA will instead present the nominees and winners, sources told Deadline.
Black-ish star Tracee Ellis Ross said on Monday in an interview with the Wall Street Journal that the Golden Globes “are mired in a lot of mess right now,” and said while she was honored to be recognized with a nomination, “we will see” when it comes to the Globes.
The HFPA told Variety in October it would “move forward with a small event” for the Globes, though it has released few details on what format the show would take and how people would be able to watch it since then.
The Golden Globes is scheduled to take place on Sunday, January 9, at the Beverly Hilton.
Key Background
Days before the Golden Globes’ 78th award ceremony in February, 2021, the Los Angeles Times published a report detailing the lack of diversity among the HFPA’s members and alleging that some members received gifts from studios and producers in exchange for their support. There was a swift fallout following the report, with entertainment companies like Netflix and WarnerMedia boycotting the Golden Globes and NBC announcing in May it would no longer air the 2022 ceremony. The HFPA announced it would reform its policies, including no longer allowing gifts to be accepted. It also brought on 21 new members into the organization in October, including six Black members and 10 women.
What To Watch For
What the Golden Globes’ format will be this year. Though the HFPA has not yet announced official plans for the show, Deadline reported that the ceremony may be live streamed and the winners could be announced live on the Golden Globes’ social media.
