Github Freeze Accounts Of Russian Developers Related To Sanctioned Firms

  • Github, the significant developer platform, has supposedly frozen over a dozen accounts of some Russian developers.
  • Github is a popular software developer platform used to store, collaborate, and track software projects.
  • It seems like the sanctions following the Russia-Ukraine war have forced Github to freeze the accounts of the ones associated with sanctioned firms.

The US Sanctions on some Russians have now brought Github in tandem as the open-source platform takes a move.

Is This Move Contrary To Its Open-Source Nature?

Github, the significant developer platform, has supposedly frozen over a dozen accounts of those Russian developers who were associated with organizations under the US sanctions list.

The accounts sanctioned comprise names like Sberbank and Alfa-Bank, along with some individuals related to the Sanctioned organizations. Though apparently, accounts with no such associations were also blocked in the process. This was highlighted by Sergey Bobrov, a researcher who has no links to any sanctioned firm and reported that his account was frozen but then later restored.

According to another developer, he highlighted via Twitter that his Github account had been suspended without prior notification, perhaps because he is ethnically Russian.

Github is a popular software developer platform used for storing, collaborating, and tracking software projects. The platform facilitates the developers with uploading their own code files, and they can also partner with other developers on open-source projects.

Due to its open-source nature, Github has gained quite a prominence in the crypto space. But this move of suspending developers’ accounts has raised questions as the platform has vowed to enable open-source services to be accessible for all.

The Russia-Ukraine war is still ongoing, and the impacts are clear to date. Many entities in the crypto industry have taken action against Russian users. The US earlier carried out sanctions on some Russians. It seems like Github has now taken its move to support Ukraine.
