Game Two Of Women’s College World Series Set To Draw Big Audience

Game One of the Women’s College World Series saw the largest viewership ever on record as an average of 2.1 million viewers (peaking at 2.8 million) watched Texas and Texas Tech matchup. For reference, the WCWS game one numbers almost match the Stanley Cup finals which averaged 2.42 million viewers.

In game one, Texas took the win 2-1 despite a controversial obstruction call and due to the heroics of catcher/utility player Reese Atwood. Atwood who had struggled at the plate all post-season was supposed to be intentionally walked by Texas Tech ace NiJaree Canady. However, Canady’s intentional walk pitches were too close to the zone and on the fourth pitch Atwood drilled a single up the left side to score the two runs that won the game.

Historically, in the Women’s College World Series the team that wins game one of the best-of-three championship series, 79% of the time wins the title. Both Texas and Texas Tech are seeking their first program titles. Texas Tech has never had a season this brilliant, but Texas’ postseason story has been riddled with agonizing defeat as the Longhorns have lost in 2022 and 2024 in the championship series. This year is about redemption.

Thursday, June 5, game two could be the storybook ending that Texas has been searching and working for, but after Canady’s intentional walk debacle in game one will motivate her, expect her to come out with a vengeance.

The only prediction to be made for game two, the viewership numbers will match or exceed game one, as the trend for 2025 NCAA softball postseason has been grounded in growth and breaking records.
