Gabi Elnicki didn’t get the guy at the end of the Season 27 finale of “The Bachelor,” but she did get the sympathy of fans and the ultimate fashion accolade on social media.
After viewers watched Elnicki get her heart broken (and then some) during the main episode, her appearance on the live portion of the show had them commenting on the sparkling black mini she wore for her final face-off with Shallcross.
With thoughts of Princess Diana in mind, the look was instantly dubbed her “revenge dress.”
And it’s easy to see why, at least to those who know their iconic fashion statements.
But for those unaware of the late royal’s original revenge dress, now is the perfect time for a stylish history lesson.
Diana had her little black dress commissioned by designer Christina Stabolian, and she wore it to The Vanity Fair party at the Serpentine Gallery on November 20, 1994 in London. It was an instant, headline-grabbing hit, and the public felt certain it was more than just a frock. It was a sartorial strike at her then estranged husband, Prince (now King) Charles.
The reason for revenge was seen as simple—the same day of the party, two years after the pair had separated, a documentary was released in which Charles told biographer Jonathan Dimbleby that he’d been faithful in his marriage to Diana “until it became irretrievably broken down.”
The dress was seen as Diana’s way of showing the world that she was strong, sexy and in no need of the man she would formally divorce just two years later.
So it’s no wonder “Bachelor” fans believed Elnicki’s little black dress was meant to serve a similar purpose when she had the chance to tell Shallcross exactly what she thought of his conduct toward her on the show—especially when it came to their night of intimacy in the Fantasy Suite one week before the finale.
“We decided it was going to be between us,” the 25-year-old account executive said of their encounter, which happened after Shallcross had stated he wouldn’t have sex with anyone. “We said that that night. I remember I was brushing my teeth, and you came up behind me, you kissed me on the back of my head. You said, ‘This is just between us.’ And I said, ‘Yes, this is just between us.’”
The next morning, he returned to her room to tell her about his need to tell one of the other contestants that he didn’t keep his chaste pledge.
“I understand that you were trying to be honest and trying to think of everyone’s feelings. I can see your point of view there,” she noted. “However, what I wished would have happened was that you warned me that you were going to use my name, and that you were going to tell everyone what had happened. Because I didn’t know you were going to do that, and even when you talked to me. I didn’t know that you had told everyone until I watched it last week.”
It was what she considered a low blow from Shallcross, and the audience in studio seemed to agree with her.
Those who cheered her fashion choice on social media didn’t even mention Shallcross. They were more fixated on what she said with her outfit.
Way to follow in some fashionable royal footsteps, Gabi.
