Former Trump Advisor Peter Navarro Pleads Not Guilty To Contempt Of Congress Charges

Topline

Peter Navarro pleaded not guilty Friday to two charges of contempt of Congress over his refusal to cooperate with a House committee’s investigation of the Capitol attack of January 6, 2021, according to several outlets.

Key Facts

Navarro’s arraignment at a federal court in Washington, D.C., comes after he was indicted earlier this month for refusing to appear in front of the January 6 committee or turn over documents to the panel.

Navarro, who served as a trade advisor to former President Donald Trump, faces a maximum prison sentence of two years and a fine of up to $200,000.

Judge Amit Mehta set a November 17 trial date for Navarro, according to several outlets.

Key Background

The 72-year-old Navarro was an early backer of Trump’s false claims of fraud in the 2020 election, and was subpoenaed by the January 6 panel in February over a book published in November in which he wrote that he openly worked to overturn the results of the election. The House of Representatives voted to hold Navarro in contempt in April after he refused to comply with the subpoena. Navarro and fellow Trump Administration advisor Steve Bannon are the only two people to face criminal contempt charges over the January 6 House probe thus far. Bannon’s request to dismiss the charges was tossed out by a federal judge Wednesday.

Crucial Quote

“All will be revealed,” Navarro ominously told reporters upon his Friday arrival to court according to CBS News, without taking any questions from the media.
