Foo Fighters Announce First Album Since Death Of Drummer Taylor Hawkins

Rock legends Foo Fighters are making a comeback, announcing on Wednesday (April 19) that they have completed their eleventh album, But Here We Are. Set to drop on June 2, the new studio effort will be their first release since the passing of drummer Taylor Hawkins last year.

“Rescued,” the first single off of the album, was also released alongside the announcement. Those who preordered the CD received a download of the tune immediately. The news was accompanied by the unveiling of the album cover, which is almost entirely white with the title written at the bottom in a very faint shade of gray.

To complete But Here We Are, Foo Fighters worked with Greg Kurstin, a producer better known for his work with pop artists like Kelly Clarkson, Sia and Adele, though he has also found himself in the rock field and produced for the likes Paul McCartney and Beck in the past.

Kurstin has history with Foo Fighters, as he actually produced the band’s most recent album, Medicine at Midnight, which won them the coveted Best Rock Album Grammy.

But Here We Are will be the band’s first new music since Medicine at Midnight was released in early 2021. The album was well-received by fans and critics alike, and it peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200.

Foo Fighters have faced a difficult year since the death of drummer Taylor Hawkins, who passed away suddenly and unexpectedly while they were on tour in Colombia in March 2022. The band took time off, but recently has been playing live again, including a tribute to the late drummer. They recently announced a slew of headlining shows, beginning on May 24 in New Hampshire and will continue through the fall.

As their formal announcement, Foo Fighters published the following statement on their website:

“Following a year of staggering losses, personal introspection and bittersweet remembrances, Foo Fighters return with But Here We Are, out June 2 on Roswell Records/RCA Records.

A brutally honest and emotionally raw response to everything Foo Fighters endured over the last year, But Here We Are is a testament to the healing powers of music, friendship and family. Courageous, damaged and unflinchingly authentic, But Here We Are opens with newly released lead single “Rescued,” the first of 10 songs that run the emotional gamut from rage and sorrow to serenity and acceptance, and myriad points in between.

Produced by Greg Kurstin and Foo Fighters, But Here We Are is in nearly equal measure the 11th Foo Fighters album and the first chapter of the band’s new life. Sonically channelling the naiveté of Foo Fighters’ 1995 debut, informed by decades of maturity and depth, But Here We Are is the sound of brothers finding refuge in the music that brought them together in the first place 28 years ago, a process that was as therapeutic as it was about a continuation of life.”
