Congratulations are in order for Fifty Fifty, whose single “Cupid” has achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first-ever track by a K-pop girl group to reach the top 10 on the U.K. songs chart.
The group’s viral hit “Cupid” has broken into the top 10 on the national ranking of the most-consumed tunes in the U.K. on the current ranking, reaching a new peak of No. 9 on the chart. The cut has recently enjoyed newfound popularity on TikTok, and it is quickly picking up steam.
“Cupid” has only been on the U.K. singles chart for six weeks, which isn’t a very long time for any track to vault into the top 10—let alone one from a relatively unknown act.
While other K-pop girl groups have found success on the U.K. songs chart in the past, and some have scored a number of wins, none of them have managed with Fifty Fifty has.
Blackpink is the most successful all-female vocal outfit hailing from South Korea, at least when looking at the sheer number of hits they’ve landed in the U.K. They have proven to be a powerhouse on the U.K. songs chart, having charted eight top 40 hits, including “Pink Venom,” “Lovesick Girls,” and “Kill This Love,” among others. Their highest-charting song so far is their own “How You Like That,” which climbed as high as No. 20 on the list.
In 2022, Blackpink scored a historic achievement by claiming the top spot on the U.K. albums chart with their second studio album, Born Pink, making them the first-ever K-pop girl group to do so.
Looking at all South Korean musical acts, only a handful of scored top 10 hits in the U.K. That list includes Psy (“Gangnam Style” and “Gentleman”), Pinking (“Baby Shark”) and BTS (“Dynamite,” “Life Goes On,” “Butter,” “My Universe” with Coldplay), and now Fifty Fifty.
So far, Fifty Fifty has only released a handful of songs, as they only officially launched in 2022. They dropped an EP last fall, but they hadn’t yet made themselves known in Western markets yet, so it didn’t perform well. Now, with the success of “Cupid,” they may see older cuts rise in popularity, and they have set themselves up for future success with whatever they work on next.
