FCC Greenlights Paramount-Skydance Merger

Topline

An $8 billion merger between Paramount and Skydance Media was approved by the Federal Communications Commission on Thursday, according to multiple outlets, after Skydance said it would end diversity, equity and inclusion considerations in hiring, promotions, development and compensation.

Key Facts

The FCC greenlit the transfer of local TV station outlet licenses from CBS to Skydance, Variety reported, adding the deal is expected to close in the coming weeks.

Skydance will gain control of CBS broadcast television, Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon under the deal, which was announced over a year ago.

FCC Chair Brendan Carr said in a statement he welcomed Skydance’s commitment to multiple changes at CBS because “Americans no longer trust the legacy national news media to report fully, accurately, and fairly.”

Carr further lauded Skydance’s commitments to having news and entertainment programming “embody a diversity of viewpoints,” bringing an end of DEI programs at Paramount and injecting $1.5 billion into Paramount operations, including local broadcast affiliates.
