FC Barcelona are reigniting their interest to sign Brazilian right back Vanderson from AS Monaco.
The 21-year-old was already targeted by the Blaugrana in the recently closed summer transfer window, and has remained on their shortlist for a position that is understocked at Camp Nou.
Head coach Xavi Hernandez didn’t trust Sergino Dest, who followed veteran Daniel Alves out of the exit door on loan to AC Milan, and Hector Bellerin has only been signed on a temporary deal until the end of the season.
Even if Barca were to be convinced by their former academy star Bellerin and make his stay permanent, they still need back-up in the position for the 27-year-old and interest in Brazilian talent Vanderson has been resparked.
The ex-Gremio prodigy stands out for his offensive prowess and is also tall, fast and physically powerful while regarded as one of the players with the most potential in his position across European football.
After the 2022 World Cup, he is expected to be called up to the senior national team when the CBF have appointed a successor to current manager Tite, which could also increase his value.
According to SPORT, it has already been decided that Vanderson’s second season at Monaco will be his last. Due to this, Barca face rivals for his signature such as Manchester United and Newcastle United in the Premier League.
When Barca sporting director Mateu Alemany contacted Monaco in recent months to get their asking price for Vanderson, he was quoted a €60mn ($60mn) fee that was deemed too much after similar amounts had already been paid, or were about to be paid, for the likes of Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha and Jules Kounde.
Ahead of next season, however, with midfield and the attacking line already well-manned, right back is a position that president Joan Laporta and his board will consider a priority to be reinforced.
Furthermore, with Vanderson arriving in Catalonia, Kounde and his fellow center back Ronald Araujo could focus on playing their natural role as opposed to filling in for Xavi.
This might push the likes of Eric Garcia and Andreas Christensen out of Xavi’s plans, but a packed calendar could leave everyone more or less satisfied with their playing time as Vanderson is gradually bedded in.
