FC Barcelona blew a two-goal lead and then came back from 3-2 behind to beat Villarreal at the Estadio de la Ceramica on Sunday.
With a 4-3 victory, they are now just two points behind La Liga leaders Real Madrid at the summit.
Gavi and Frenkie de Jong put Barca 2-0 up inside a quarter of an hour after they weathered early pressure from the hosts.
Lamine Yamal bagged his first assist as a professional player in a competitive fixture – after also setting up Ferran Torres in the Joan Gamper Trophy against Tottenham Hotspur – by knocking in a swinging ball for Gavi to head home on 12 minutes.
As Robert Lewandowski struggled to dribble on the edge of the box, a tackle fell directly into the path of De Jong to convert cooly past Filip Jorgensen.
The Catalans might have thought that they were in for an easy afternoon at the home of the Yellow Submarine, but then capitulated by conceding two goals before the break and a third just five minutes after play had resumed.
Barca needed a creative spark from somewhere, and once more it came from Yamal who was once more picked in favor of Ferran to start on the right wing.
Ferran worked hard for the equalizer partly scored through persistence and will. Yamal had hit the bar before it, though, and perhaps deserved a credit for another assist after smacking the post three minutes later following a dangerous cut inside.
Finally getting off the mark in 2023/2024, Lewandowski tapped home the rebound and secured the lead for the visitors.
Without much trouble from Villarreal, they managed to hold onto the lead amid Ansu Fati failing to use good judgement and helping kill the game off.
On a charge forward, the struggling 20-year-old should have squared the ball for Lewandowski but instead went for broke through an ineffective shot that had little to no chance of being fruitful.
In stoppage time, the Pole then did likewise when his close range shot was blocked and was selfish even though Fati had a better scoring opportunity.
With their second victory of the season in the bag, Barca now travel to Osasuna next Sunday in their last fixture before the September international break.
