FC Barcelona have approached La Liga to sound out the possible return of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
The Gabon international arrived at Camp Nou around a year ago in the dying minutes of the January 2022 transfer window after rescinding his contract with Arsenal.
While Aubameyang left the Gunners on poor terms after a falling out with head coach Mikel Arteta, he became an instant hit with Barca fans for his goalscoring exploits which included a memorable brace in a 4-0 drubbing of Real Madrid at the Bernabeu in El Clasico.
Though Barca fell short in La Liga and the Europa League that term, Aubameyang proved pivotal in securing Champions League qualification but was not allowed to star for the Catalans in the elite continental competition.
After the likes of Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha arrived at the club in a summer spending spree, Aubameyang was shipped out to Chelsea in that transfer window.
Now aged 33, Aubameyang has failed to make an impact at Stamford Bridge which, according to Gerard Romero, has led Barca to explore his potential return to the club in the coming weeks.
The arrival of Joao Felix at Chelsea in a loan deal worth a reported €11mn ($11.8mn) has further complicated Aubameyang’s lot in west London.
According to Romero, the player has been in constant contact with Xavi who has told him to be patient.
On Wednesday afternoon, Barca are said to have approached La Liga to learn about how possible it is for Aubameyang to don Blaugrana in 2022/2023, where Barca currently lead La Liga and can compete for the Copa del Rey and Europa League.
For a coup to be pulled off, it is thought that either Memphis Depay or Franck Kessie must leave in order for Barca to balance Financial Fair Play regulations.
Though Robert Lewandowski is an immovable object in the starting line up as Xavi’s ‘9’, his recent absence through suspension has highlighted a need for back-up with Aubameyang also capable of playing on the wing where Ferran Torres, Raphinha and Ansu Fati have suffered mixed fortunes.
