FC Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong has spoken on his potential move away from the club to Manchester United.
The 25-year-old has been linked with a switch to Old Trafford since his former Ajax boss Erik ten Hag was appointed as the Premier
Reports have claimed that the Dutch playmaker has given his ‘ok’ to the transfer, which United previously felt confident of finalizing in a matter of days.
With June 30 and the start of Barca’s preseason campaign on July 4 fast approaching, though, the deal has hit a fork in the road after tension emerged in negotiations.
Barca have allegedly warned United they want at least €100mn ($104mn) for the man they paid €75mn ($78mn) for in 2019, but the Mancunians are not willing to go over €80m ($83mn) in total including add-ons.
“We want De Jong, but we won’t be Barca’s savior from their financial issues. We will only sign him if it’s a reasonable price,” a club source told British paper The Mirror, with United threatening to end talks if they can’t reach an agreement that suits both parties as well as the player.
Amid speculation about his future, De Jong has addressed the matter himself on Tuesday evening after the Netherlands’ 3-2 home win over Wales in Rotterdam.
“You’re always flattered when teams show interest in you as a player but I am at the biggest club in the world at the moment,” De Jong said via The Dai
“I feel fine there. So, no news,” he added.
In Catalonia, De Jong’s remarks have been accepted by SPORT as him rejecting United’s offer and professing his love for Barca once more.
The daily newspaper adds that De Jong will now go on vacation after completing his commitments with his national team. But it is safe to assume he would like to have his fate resolved before Barca head to the United States later in summer to play three preseason games including an episode of El Clasico against Real Madrid in Las Vegas.
