FC Barcelona will receive a much-needed €200 million ($214 million) from La Liga amid winning the Spanish top flight title, as reported by MARCA.
The Catalans are still hungover from clinching their first Spanish championship in four years and a maiden crown under head coach Xavi Hernandez.
They have lost their last two games home and away to Real Sociedad and Real Valladolid, but the hard work completed earlier this month when they beat bitter rivals Espanyol 4-2 across town guaranteed that neither of Madrid’s two teams can catch them at the summit.
As explained by MARCA, a total of around €356 million ($382 million) will be distributed by La Liga to its teams depending on where they have finished un the table.
Thanks to guaranteeing first place, Barca are set to receive 17% of the kitty which is roughly €60.64 million ($65 million).
Furthermore, the Blaugrana will be paid €140 million ($150 million) in television rights to bring the total past €200 million.
Remembering that Barca sold 25% of their television rights to Sixth Street for the next 25 yesrs last summer, as one of their ‘economic levers’, they would need to hand over €40 million ($43 million) of this cash to the American investment firm.
Still, this leaves Barca with a much-welcomed and needed €160 million ($172 million) at a time when they must shed €200 million from the wage bill on the orders of La Liga president Javier Tebas as a means of navigating Financial Fair Play limits.
The money from winning La Liga won’t be forthcoming all at once and will be split into five payments of 35%, 20%, 15%, 15%, and 15% over five years.
Barca will though soon receive 35% for the first place finish and 20% for being runners-up to Real Madrid in 2021/2022.
This term, second place will be granted 15% of the total €356 million or roughly around €53.5 million ($57.5 million).
With 36 matchdays crossed off, Barca have two games left to play in La Liga. On Sunday, they host Mallorca at Camp Nou then bookend a campaign that also brought a January Spanish Super Cup win next week at Celta Vigo.
