As explained by Mundo Deportivo, FC Barcelona are set to receive a much-needed financial boost in television money thanks to winning La Liga.
The cash-strapped Catalans recently sealed their first La Liga title – and a maiden Spanish top flight crown under head coach Xavi Hernandez – in four years.
As determined by a Royal Decree, 50% of a total €1.4 billion ($1.5 billion) in audiovisual rights money is shared evenly among La Liga’s teams before the remaining 50% is distributed depending on where they finished in 2022/2023.
The fixed amount is €35 million ($37.5 million) per club, and Barca finishing top of the pile this term means that they will be set to receive another €60 million ($64 million) equalling roughly €95 million ($101.5 million) in total.
This is around €7 million ($7.5 million) more than second-place, bitter rivals Real Madrid will receive at approximately €89 million ($95.1 million).
Just worrying about themselves, however, the amount Barca’s coffers will be lined with is much-welcomed at a time when the club is struggling to convince La Liga they can afford to sign new players such as Lionel Messi through a viability plan.
La Liga president Javier Tebas warned the Blaugrana that €200 million ($214 million) must be shed from the wage bill in order to buy plus also register the contracts of incoming and existing first team squad members.
They will need to rely heavily on making sales to get deals over the line, but the exits of high-paid veterans including Gerard Pique, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba have already helped tremendously in balancing the books.
The news regarding television rights money comes after MARCA reported that Barca are also set to receive €60 million in bonus money for winning La Liga.
Estimates predicted that a total of €200 million ($214 million) would be forthcoming for the achievement, but this factored in an expected €140 million ($150 million) in television rights money too.
Remember also that as part of one of their ‘economic levers’ last summer, 25% of any television rights money Barca receive must be handed over to American investment firm Sixth Street.
