FC Barcelona are prepared to sell Marc-Andre Ter Stegen to Paris Saint Germain and have determined the price they would accept for their star goalkeeper, according to reports.
After a rocky couple of years post-pandemic, the German has staged an impressive comeback to stand among the world’s greatest shotstoppers once more.
Conceding just eight goals in 25 matches and keeping 19 clean sheets, the 30-year-old has had much to do with Barca rising to the top of La Liga where they boast a nine point lead over Real Madrid and are closing in on their first domestic league title since 2019.
If reports from El Nacional are accurate, however, the 2022/2023 season could be his last at Camp Nou.
This is because Paris Saint Germain are interested in the former Borussia Monchengladbach man, while not completely satisfied with the displays of Gianluigi Donnarumma who they see as complicit in their last two exits from the Champions League last 16.
Ter Stegen has been given ‘untouchable’ status in Catalonia alongside the likes of Pedri, Gavi, Ronald Araujo, and Frenkie de Jong.
This loosely means he cannot be sold for any price, and is why Barca reportedly knocked back a proposal from Premier
Yet with Barca’s financial problems being what they are, it is said that president Joan Laporta will accept an €80 million ($85 million) offer from Paris Saint Germain which would be a “betrayal” of head coach Xavi Hernandez.
Even though Barca are mired in debts and have to eliminate €200 million ($212.8 million) from the wage bill on the orders of La Liga president Javier Tebas, however, it seems hard to believe that Laporta would consider gifting one of the best in his trade to a continental rival.
Receiving such a relatively pitiful sum for their number 1, they would also struggle to find a like-for-like replacement for a similar price at the same time Inaki Pena is perhaps not ready to lead Barca from the back.
As has been said many a time, the Catalans should look at offloading underperforming players and those that are surplus to requirements such as Ferran Torres, Eric Garcia and perhaps Ansu Fati before negotiating first XI stars.
