FC Barcelona have made another informal offer to Lionel Messi and his camp, who have gone behind the club’s back and spoken to La Liga about the strength of its viability plan according to Gerard Romero.
Messi becomes a free agent on June 30, with Barca attempting to win the race to snatch the Argentine away from Paris Saint Germain.
The cash-strapped Catalans are fighting a David and Goliath-esque battle against Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia, who have tabled a €350 million ($375 million) offer Messi has already accepted according to El Chiringuito.
Messi’s father and agent Jorge Messi has denied that they have an agreement in place with any prospective new club. Yet according to Romero, who reported a number of updates on the Messi saga on Tuesday evening via a live Twitch stream from outside Camp Nou, Barca have made the Qatar 2022 winner and his camp another informal offer.
SPORT previously reported that Barca presented Messi with €25 million ($27.5 million) per season to don their colors again. Romero didn’t come with precise figures this time, but revealed that Jorge Messi is anxious because he wants to resolve his son’s future as soon as possible.
Earlier today, SPORT reported that the Messis weren’t considering Barca as a real option with regards to possible next destinations because of their problems getting their house in order and making a concrete offer.
Perhaps suffering some sort of transfer-related PTSD from the summer of 2021, when Barca failed to grant their greatest ever player a new contract which led to him walking to PSG, Jorge Messi is reported as being suspicious of everything while seeing several contradictions with Barca’s current version of events and their navigation of Financial Fair Play.
Barca have drawn up a viability plan to prove to La Liga they can make the numbers work on a potential return for Messi.
According to Romero, however, Jorge Messi privately spoke to the Spanish top flight on Tuesday to find out what is going on with the viability plan, such is his distrust of everything.
In the last revision of the viability plan Romero added, Barca were €40 million ($43 million) out of balance which has made Jorge Messi nervous because he believes the issue should have been resolved last week.
Romero reported that La Liga chiefs will hold a very important meeting at 10AM on Wednesday morning with Barca’s viability plan the only topic on the agenda.
It goes without saying that a second stint in Spain for Messi would also be of great benefit to the national championship. This month, an internal economic report obtained by SPORT predicted the development could bring in €230 million ($247 million) yearly for the club alone should it come to fruition.
