Save for a 1-1 draw at Rayo Vallecano, Hansi Flick’s treble winners last season had started their 2025/2026 campaign strongly with a string of victories.
In a week to forget before the October international break, though, the Catalans lost 2-1 to Paris-Saint Germain in the Champions League after going a goal ahead – but the worst was yet to come.
Last Sunday, at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan, Barca was thrashed 4-1 by Sevilla and seemed off the pace for most of the afternoon.
Once the talk of Europe, Barca’s back line is weaker with its offside trap faltering, and the pressing that is a cornerstone of Flick’s aggressive, high-scoring game doesn’t seem to work like it did before.
The international break has afforded internal diagnosis, which has been carried out by Flick and his staff while President Joan Laporta and Director of Football Deco have both spoken publicly on the matter.
What did FC Barcelona President Laporta say?
Speaking from a meeting of the ECA European clubs group, Laporta said that Flick and Deco “are doing a great job” in their respective positions.
“We come from two games that we lost and haven’t played as we wanted,” the president conceded, though he also pointed to the “injuries of important players” such as Lamine Yamal and Raphinha that have played their part.
Above all, Laporta knows “will know how to turn the situation around by taking advantage of the international break”.
Deco was more direct and referred to Flick’s comment that “egos kill success” while speaking to the press this week.
“We are a competitive team if we work hard.”, he said to local radio, which such statements from Flick a “way to maintain the tension that a team that aspires to win all competitions must maintain”.

SPORT points out that the coach, president and director of football all “seem to agree and go in the same tune”, which is key to achieving the club’s objectives and fighting for all the titles on offer.
