FC Barcelona fans chanted Lionel Messi’s name during the 10th minute of their team’s Copa del Rey semi-final second leg clash against Real Madrid in El Clasico on Wednesday.
The Catalans hosted their bitter enemies at Camp Nou for the last four tie and boasted a 1-0 advantage from the first meeting between the two sides in March.
Mundo Deportivo published an article a few hours before kick off and suggested that Barca fans could pay the tribute in the 10th minute, or any other, to send a “clear message” to the Argentine that Culers wants him back in Blaugrana and playing for their La Liga champions-in waiting side once more.
Such a thing was done by those in attendance at the same stadium on March 26, when Camp Nou hosted the final of Gerard Pique’s King’s League, and Messi’s close friend Sergi Aguero has suggested that it might have had an influence on the World Cup winner as per the decision he will make regarding his club career future.
“It’s probably because of what happened that day with Gerard in the Kings League,” joked Aguero when speaking to popular streamer Ibai Llanos.
“Yes, for sure,” Aguero also said, when asked if the thought the love Messi received had gotten back to him. “It seems that day at Camp Nou was key,” Ibai added.
Gathering in a popular square in front of the stadium and doing so before kick off, Barca fans that attended El Clasico did likewise in the 10th minute of the action as shown in social media clips on Twitter.
Messi is out of contract on June 30 at Paris Saint Germain and could well become a Barca player again if president Joan Laporta and his board can get the numbers right.
Though they cannot afford anything close to the $438 million offer Messi has received from Al-Hilal according to Fabrizio Romano, or the €3.375 million ($3.7 million) he receives monthly at Parc des Princes as reported by L’Equipe last week, it is clear that the 35-year-old is still loved in Catalonia.
Amid being booed when his name was read out before PSG’s 1-0 home loss to Lyon on Sunday, the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner might be further convinced that his next move should be a Prodigal Son return to where it all started in Europe as a shy 13-year-old.
