FC Barcelona are already considering a plan to sign Kylian Mbappe as a free agent in 2025, according to reports.
The French wonderkid chose to stay put at Paris Saint Germain at the weekend, and rejected the Catalans’ bitter rivals Real Madrid after first agreeing terms with the Champions League finalists but then calling their president Florentino Perez to renege on their deal.
“I have great respect for Madrid,” Mbappe insisted at a Monday press conference. “They did everything they could to make my arrival at their club happen, and I’m grateful to them for that. I had to tell him [Pérez] personally.”
But despite Mbappe’s common courtesy, the snub has reportedly infuriated Perez, who has now been ditced at the altar twice by Mbappe in five years given the forward chose PSG over Los Blancos when leaving Monaco in 2017.
Whilever the European Super League’s main backer is in charge, Madrid are highly unlikely to approach Mbappe ever again after such a public humiliation, which is where Barca can enter the race for his signature in 2025.
Mbappe becomes a free man on June 30 then, and admitted “I don’t know where I’ll be in three years” at the mentioned media event.
Around this time, should they manage to land the Pole this summer, Robert Lewandowski would be leaving Camp Nou or possibly retiring from football altogether.
Debt-ridden Barca will presumably be in a much stronger financial situation to offer Mbappe a handsome signing-on fee and a better salary than they can at present as well. To this end, SPORT report that the short length of Mbappe’s renewal has “attracted a lot of attention” in Catalonia, where the Blaugrana are “already looking askance” at the player’s near future.
“There is time to work on it and with Madrid out of the equation,” the paper adds, saying that Barca have “won a battle” in Mbappe not joining the eternal enemy and are willing to start a war to see him don their colors midway through the decade when Mbappe’s potential generational rival Erling Haaland, who has just joined Manchester City, could end up at the Bernabeu given a supposed special release clause in his contract.
