FC Barcelona are on course to make history with a 100-point season following their latest win on the road at Real Betis.
In comparison to Saturday’s 1-0 scrape against Girona, the Blaugrana were in complete control at the Estadio Benito Villamarin where they went two goals ahead thanks to goals from Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski.
Not even a late Jules Kounde own goal could throw Barca off balance. They held on to the end, achieving a 2-1 win that put them eight points clear over Real Madrid who play Valencia on Thursday evening.
Xavi hailed his troops for playing a “brilliant game”. Achieving his first piece of silverware in the Spanish Super Cup final last month when his men outclassed Madrid 3-1 in Riyadh, he is now on course not just for the Catalans’ first top flight crown since 2019 but also a 100-point season.
The Betis victory improved Barca’s tally thus far in 2022/2023 to 50 points which, as MARCA points out, they have only hit or exceeded five times previously at this point in the season.
With 16 victories, and only two draws and one loss, Xavi’s squad are well on course to become just the third team since another Barca outfit and one from Real Madrid to double their current total and notch 100 points.
The last time that Barca had this amount of points at this stage of a campaign was in 2017/2018 under Ernesto Valverde. With 51, they then went on to win the league with 93 points.
In 2013-14, Barca reached 50 with Tata Martino but still last out on the title to Atletico Madrid. With the late Tito Vilanova at wheel, though, 2012-2013 reached the midway stage of the term with 55 points and then achieved their only 100-point title win with Xavi at the heart of midfield.
Seasons where Pep Guardiola led Barca to the league title and champions league, in 2008/2009 and 2010/2011 saw him achieve 50 and 52 points respectively in January.
Yet as mentioned only one other team, Jose Mourinho’s Real Madrid in 2011-2012 went on to achieve 100 points.
With 19 games to spare, not even losing another Clasico to Los Blancos at Camp Nou in March can derail Barca from their plans as long as they still win a minimum of 16 games and draw the other two.
