FC Barcelona have announced that more new signings will be made in the coming weeks.
The Blaugrana have been busy with their checkbook in past days, managing to deliver two of first team coach Xavi Hernandez’s main transfer targets in Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski while Frenck Kessie and Andreas Christensen have arrived at Camp Nou as free agents.
Denmark international Christensen is a good option at center back. But with Barca boasting a wealth of talent in midfield and up front, further strengthening the backline is now a top priority for Xavi and Laporta which was confirmed by the latter to Mexican sports channel TUDN during press commitments for the Catalans’ US preseason tour.
“Now we are going to work on defense,” Laporta stated.
“Xavi has us alert to a series of players and I hope that they can bring Cules (Barca fans) more joy.
“We have competed with teams like PSG and Chelsea to sign Robert [Lewandowski] and he wanted to come here. You have to be thankful for that. That and the maximum pressure that he has had to endure,” Laporta went on.
Laporta then added that on a personal level, he is “relaxed” about the financial levers the club has activated or is still yet to activate, as well as the signings that have been made.
“We want to make a competitive team, [and] give Xavi the tools to have a good team and I think we are on the right track,” Laporta concluded.
Moving forward, then, Barca’s main interests for the mentioned area of the pitch are Marcos Alonso and Cesar Azpilicueta – both from Chelsea – plus Sevilla’s Jules Kounde.
At the weekend, it was said that Barca had made an offer of €58mn ($58.5mn) plus unspecified variables for France star Kounde and other outlets claim there to be a “total agreement” between the two clubs and the player.
On Tuesday morning, SPORT report that should negotiations for Alonso fall through, Barca will instead look towards Monaco’s highly-rated Brazilian defender Caio Henrique.
According to the Catalan daily newspaper, the 24-year-old who delivered 12 assists from left back last season should cost around €25mn ($25.4mn).
