Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski has agreed terms with FC Barcelona to join the La Liga club next season, according to reports.
This has been claimed by Sport Italia on Saturday, who say that the 33-year-old Poland captain has an agreement in principle with the Catalans.
Barca’s interest in Lewandowski began to be reported on seriously this week during the international break. Xavi Hernandez’s men have been linked to Kylian Mbappe, who once looked certain to join Real Madrid on a free transfer from Paris Saint Germain despite the Qatari-backed outfit allegedly offering the French World Cup winner €1mn ($1.1mn) a week to stay at Parc des Princes.
Mbappe would be Barca’s Plan B after top transfer target Erling Haaland, who Xavi wants as the cornerstone of his Camp Nou sporting project which is currently gaining traction after an impressive 4-0 win over bitter rivals Madrid in El Clasico last Sunday.
The fact that the Norwegian sensation would cost more than $300mn all-in, however, is a big obstacle for cash-strapped Barca whose president Joan Laporta has consistently gone on the record stating that he will not compromise his club’s future while it is mired in debts circling $1.5bn.
This has led Barca towards Lewandowski, who currently has a year left on his contract with Munich set to expire in June 2023.
If terms really have been agreed with the two-time reigning The Best winner, the Blaugrana now need to make a suitable offer to the Bundesliga kings who have had their offers of contract renewals rebuffed by their second all-time top scorer.
It has been reported that Barca are willing to table €50mn ($55mn) to land Lewandowski but can go up to €60mn ($66mn).
After eight seasons in Bavaria, ‘Lewa’ is said to long for a change of scenery with Barca aware of what boasting the Ballon d’Or hopeful will do for their global image while making them more attractive to sponsors.
Lewandowski is currently on international duty with Poland, who will face Sweden in a qualifying final on Sunday that grants passage to the 2022 World Cup in November.
