Topline
Fast X, the tenth installment of the Fast & Furious franchise, earned the No. 1 spot at the box office this weekend, drawing $318 million in global sales in its first weekend in theaters, multiple news outlets reported—but the film’s U.S. box office figures fell short of most previous Fast & Furious movies.
Key Facts
Fast X earned $67.5 million domestically from Friday to Sunday, falling behind the previous film in the series, F9: The Fast Saga, which brought in $70 million on its opening weekend in 2021 even amid limited movie theater capacity due to Covid-19 restrictions.
Fast X had the fourth-smallest U.S. open of any film in the action movie franchise, drawing less than half of Furious 7, which earned just over $147 million domestically in its 2015 opening weekend, but beating 2001’s original The Fast And The Furious, which earned about $40 million, according to BoxOfficeMojo.
The foreign markets reportedly brought in an additional $251.4 million this weekend, marking the second largest global opening weekend this year after The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which brought in $377 million internationally on its opening weekend.
Among the foreign markers, Fast X had the most success in China, where it opened to $78.3 million this weekend, the Hollywood Reporter said.
Tangent
Disney’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 had another good weekend, earning an additional $32 million domestically and $48.8 million internationally for a global total of $659.1 million in its third weekend in theaters, following two weeks as the top U.S. film. The Super Mario Bros. Movie took the third spot at $9.7 million, bringing its global total to $1.248 billion and making it the biggest movie of the year. This weekend marks the first time in over a month actor Chris Pratt does not have a movie with the top spot at the box office. Pratt, the star of Guardians 3 and The Super Mario Bros. Movie, has spent the past six weeks with a film at the top box office spot.
Key Background
The Fast X cast is led by Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Turese Gibson, Ludacris, Sung Kang and Jordana Brewester. This latest installment also includes new faces like Jason Momoa, Rita Moreno, John Cena, Helen Mirren and Brie Larson. The film has a 54% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and a 87% score from audiences.
Surprising Fact
