An unnamed member of the University of North Carolina faculty was killed during a shooting on the school’s Chapel Hill campus Monday, the university said in a statement, the latest in an epidemic of gun violence that has plagued the country’s schools and universities.
UNC Police learned about shots fired in Caudill Laboratories on the university’s campus at 1:02 p.m. Eastern, according to the statement signed by Chancellor Kevin M. Guskiewicz.
A faculty member was killed in the shooting, but the university is waiting for confirmation that next of kin has been contacted before it shares more information.
At approximately 2:30 p.m. the university said a suspect was apprehended.
The suspect was not named, but UNC Police released an image at 1:35 p.m. of a person of interest.
The university has canceled classes for the rest of the day on Monday and Tuesday.
