Usually when I write these “next season” articles shortly after release, we almost never have confirmation that a next season is even coming, given that Netflix generally waits 4-5 weeks before greenlighting new seasons of even popular shows.
The Night Agent hasn’t even been out a week, and Netflix has already renewed it for season 2.
That was announced yesterday, which makes it one of the fastest renewals I’ve ever seen that wasn’t a pre-season pickup, just six days after release. Either Netflix is streamlining their process, or The Night Agent really is just performing that well. It’s probably the latter, given the The Night Agent is already the third biggest debut in Netflix history, behind only last year’s Wednesday and Dahmer.
There’s no release date for season 2 given, but Netflix shows are generally on a year, year and a half rotating basis when there’s not a pandemic happening, so that would put us at spring/summer 2024 most likely for The Night Agent season 2.
But there is one weird thing about the season 2 greenlight here. While The Night Agent is based on a book by Matthew Quirk, there is no second book, so this new story would have to be invented from scratch. It’s not yet clear if this would be a collaboration between Quirk and the showrunners, or just a Netflix-made script, or what. All we have are the statements from Netflix about the renewal. Here’s showrunner/EP/ex-Terriers creator Shawn Ryan:
“The last week has been a whirlwind as we’ve finally been able to share The Night Agent with the world. To see the tremendous reaction to the show has been a great joy and is a credit to our cast, our writers, our directors, our crew and our partners at Sony Pictures Television and Netflix. We couldn’t be any prouder or more excited to get cracking on Season 2 to share the further adventures of Night Action with our newfound fans.”
And here’s Netflix’s VP of Drama Series, Jinny Howe:
“We’re proud to see The Night Agent deliver a breakout performance and become instantly embraced around the world. Shawn Ryan has created a spy thriller sensation that viewers cannot get enough of, with a stellar cast featuring Gabriel Basso, Luciane Buchanan and Hong Chau, and we’re here to bring them more of the action and suspense they love.”
It is not hard to imagine a new case, a new conspiracy for Peter Sutherland to untangle, as The Night Agent sort of feels like a less unhinged version of 24, a very watchable spy thriller that may not be incredible, but clearly hit a lot of the right notes for a huge portion of the Netflix viewing public. Still, I remain surprised the show has been this popular, as it was not anywhere close to being on my radar before this.
So far, this is all the info we have, but more will come in as the new and returning cast rounds out, and marketing eventually begins. A wild performance from this series so far.
