The Head of PlayStation Productions, Asad Qizilbash, was on a recent PlayStation podcast where he laid out the fact that PlayStation currently has 10 film and TV projects in the works (via Okami Games).
It seems as if we know about nine of them, various movies and shows sold to a wide, wide range of studios or streaming platforms, with of course Sony having their own TV and television arm for some of them. And if there are two mysteries, I think I can guess what one of them is likely to be.
The Last of Us – The HBO megahit will be back for a second season, and likely beyond that. We know all cast members are returning, including Bella Ramsey, despite a timeskip that will age up Ellie. It’s also been confirmed season 2 will indeed adapt the second game, albeit probably only half of it, as the larger story will be broken into multiple pieces, according to Craig Mazin.
Uncharted – The film was a surprise hit, even if it didn’t do Super Mario numbers. The project was in development hell for more than a decade, but finally the Tom Holland/Mark Wahlberg version was released, did well, and Sony said it was the birth of a new franchise for them. While we don’t have Uncharted 2 details yet, it is coming, no doubt.
Horizon Zero Dawn – This series was sold to Netflix and against all odds, promises to actually be a live action production, meaning it will no doubt cost an exorbitant amount of money. No one has been cast as live-action Aloy yet, it seems.
Twisted Metal – This is an upcoming series airing on Peacock which stars Captain America himself, Anthony Mackie, who will be playing John Doe, the driver of Roadkill. Easily the weirdest project of the bunch here.
Gran Turismo – Ah but wait, a second car-based project, albeit with fewer missiles and machine guns. This one is based on the racing game that seldom has an actual storyline, and will star Stranger Things’ David Harbour. It’s a film, not a series, and also boasts Orlando Bloom and Djimon Hounsou in the cast.
Ghost of Tsushima – If I had to pick a single project I was the most excited about here, it’s the Ghost of Tsushima film, namely because it’s from John Wick director Chad Stahleski. Jin game actor Daisuke Tsuji has said he would like to reprise the role for the film, but no casting announcements have been made yet.
God of War – Amazon likely paid a pretty penny for this one, and will pay even more to realize this on the big screen. It’s adapting the more recent Norse duology of the games and I’m not sure whether this or Netflix’s Horizon will cost more money. No casting decisions have been made yet, though again, game actor Christopher Judge has said he’d love to play Kratos himself given the chance.
Days Gone – Not exactly Sony’s most prominent series, as the IP was killed off to some measure of controversy. But there is a movie in the works adapting the zombie thriller, though the last significant news we heard about it was back in August of 2022, so it’s unclear what its status may be.
Gravity Rush – Also in August a Gravity Rush movie was revealed to be reportedly in the works. Again, a somewhat forgotten game but one that Sony believes they can turn into a potential blockbuster, even if the IP remains dead in the video game world.
Mystery Animated Project (Destiny?) – This is the tenth unknown production, but Qizilbash mentioned animation in his quote, and none of these other projects are animated, so far as we know. The long-running theory is that Destiny, with Bungie recently acquired by Sony, may get an animated series in the vein of Castlevania, Arcane or Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, all of which have been great successes for those respective IPs. Bungie has been specifically making moves to branch out into multimedia, which they’ve stated many times, and I think most players would agree that animation may be the best place to start instead of some $200 million budgets live-action version of the game. The series lends itself to something like an Edgerunners style of action and animation, though there’s no indication of which part of the Destiny universe may be adapted. Probably not storylines from the actual games, if I had to guess.
I believe that’s the full ten, but we’ll see if there are any that get cut and replaced with new ones.
